How to Prepare for the Perfect Spray Tan
Skin Prep — A Few Days Before
To get the most out of your spray tan, it’s important to prepare your skin gently and consistently:
-
Exfoliate 2–3 times a week using exfoliating mitts and a gentle, oil-free shower gel. This removes dry, dead skin and gives the tan an even base to develop on.
-
Avoid shea butter, rich body oils, or heavy perfumes — these can coat the skin and block the tanning solution.
-
Check your shower gel. Look for one that’s pH-balanced and free from sulphates and alcohol. Some high-street washes are too harsh and can dry out the skin, which leads to a patchy tan.
-
Moisturise daily in the days leading up to your tan (but not on the day of your appointment). Use a light, unscented moisturiser that keeps your skin hydrated without building up residue like Black Magic Nourish
-
Don’t forget your face — a gentle exfoliator 1–2 times a week and a hydrating moisturiser will help your facial tan look natural and smooth.
Hair Removal
-
Shave at least 12 hours before your spray tan.
- Wax at least 72 hours before your tan
- If you’re using hair removal creams like Veet, do a patch test and complete it no later than 48 hours before your appointment.
On the Day of Your Tan
-
No makeup, moisturiser, deodorant, perfume, or oils on the skin.
-
Wear loose, dark clothing — joggers, oversized tops, and no tight straps, socks or bras.
-
Avoid red clothing, which can interfere with the tone of your developing tan.
Aftercare — Let It Develop
-
Follow your technician’s instructions about how long to leave the tan on before rinsing. Leaving it on too long can dry the skin and cause uneven fading.
-
Avoid water completely during the development time. Be careful brushing your teeth, washing hands, or sweating.
-
Don’t apply perfume or scented products on your skin — especially on the neck or chest — as the alcohol can break down the tan and create patches, instead spray on hair or clothes.
-
Once you’ve rinsed your tan, moisturise daily with a hydrating, tan-safe body lotion to maintain your glow Nourish and Xtend are ideal
Keep It Simple. Keep It Glowing.
